Olive Yew 5 Year Anniversary

Celebrating 5 years of making beautiful jewelry for beautiful women.

It is hard to believe that this is Olive Yew's 5 year anniversary. It has been five years since I made the leap to leave corporate America to begin making jewelry full time. Really though, it feels like I've been doing this my whole life and I can't imagine doing anything else.

Thank You

To celebrate, I want to thank our loyal customers with Facebook and Instagram contests plus a week long 15% store wide discount (*scroll to the bottom for details.) Check out our Facebook and Instagram pages for upcoming contest details to win a custom Engraved Bar Necklace and a Cursive Letter Necklace.

To change things up a bit on the blog, all the girls at Olive Yew came up with a few questions for me to answer so that you can learn a little more about Olive Yew. Of course I'm happy to answer your questions, as well. Ask away in the comment section below.

Q&A with Angela Parker Kennedy

Q: What was the last straw that finally made you make the leap into starting Olive Yew?
A: It wasn't so much a "last straw" as a contract ending. I just knew I wanted to start a business of my own as opposed to search for another job doing work I wasn't into anymore.

Q: What is the significance of the name Olive Yew?
A: I like puns and since Olive Yew looks and sounds like "I love you"  when spoken, I thought it would work well for jewelry - which is often associated with love. I know I love jewelry!

Q: Was there another name for the company you almost choose instead?
A: I don't think I considered other options.

Q: Gertie is the unofficial mascot of Olive Yew. Why did you choose a French Bulldog?
A: Because they're the cutest dogs in the whole wide world. In all seriousness, we had a bulldog who came into Olive Yew occasionally (Hi Lola, I miss you!), and we fell in love. I just love a squishy face and had never had a dog of my own as an adult. So, I met Gert and the rest is history.

Q: What was the biggest break-through that jump started the business?
A: A pair of our earrings were featured in Self magazine our first year in business. I thought print was dead, but fortunately I was wrong. We blew up at that point and soon moved from my den into our current space.

Q: What skills do you feel are the most important to continue to grow your business?
A: It gets to be a lot of work, but try to keep up with SEO best practices. They change constantly and you can look up one day after burying your head in making stuff (if you're a maker) and wonder why no one is seeing your beautiful work? Check your SEO.

Q: What new and exciting things are in Olive Yew's future?
A: Oh, a lot of things involving lasers and possibly a move!

Party Time

Since we're always looking for a reason to have dessert, we decided to throw ourselves a little party! You can never go wrong with doughnuts...

Gertie, of course, was excited about the doughnuts and tried very hard to sneak a taste.

With one big blow, all the candles were out.

In the end, Gertie was still happy to have everyone together to celebrate.
